Cassina’s Peacock Chair was created in 1959/60 as part of a series of wire furniture that Verner Panton designed for the Plus-Linje company. Panton chose steel wire for its lightness, transparency, and its ability to reflect the colors of its surroundings. The designer chose the name Peacock Chair because the geometric proportions of the frame reminded him of a peacock’s open tail. Today, Karakter and Cassina are reintroducing it to mark the centenary of Panton’s birth, in collaboration with Verner Panton Design AG.
The Peacock Chair by Karakter x Cassina stands out for its rare design versatility: the conical base can be rotated to adjust the seat height, while when removed completely, the chair transforms into a rocking chair. The seven round cushions of the Cassina Peacock Chair rest freely on the frame, allowing the seating position to be varied according to one’s preference. This multifunctionality was one of the most typical characteristics of Panton’s work, and the Peacock Chair has become one of its most recognizable symbols over time.
